Planning+Site Design

North Beach Master Plan

Short Description:
This project was done in collaboration with Herrera Environmental Engineers.
Completion Date:
Ext. Summer 2007
Location:
Port Townsend, WA
Size:
40,000 SF
Program:
A community master plan for a small-scale residential development.
Goals:
To design an alternative development model for a planned unit subdivision that emphasizes community living and integrates natural processes.  To provide a healthy, site-responsive development model that is accessible to low-income and disabled persons.

We worked with the property owner to analyze site elements, assess program components and define project goals.  Strategies include three raingardens to manage stormwater and greywater on-site, gravel and grass-pave vehicle surfacing, and footpaths connecting site functions.  All parking is located adjacent to or within the right-of-way to minimize the impact of cars on the site ecology and daily occupants.  House footprints are reduced and structures are clustered to minimize tree clearing and protect the adjacent wetland.  A shared dwelling unit provides for guest accommodation and centralized collective needs such as cooking, laundry and bathing.  Rainwater re-use, composting toilets and a permaculture approach to site cultivation further reduce the environmental impact of the project.
